That’s so retro

Thanks, Frito Lay for this new blog segment appropriately named “That’s so Retro”! For this post, I point out a few modern day retro references in pop culture. It’s going to be fun. For my inaugural post, I present three very different takes on commercializing nostalgia today. The power of entertainment on people can not be understated, and this influence is important to consider. If we are what we consume, are we consuming kind things? Let’s take a closer look!

1. Grocery store display (pictured above) This display of Frito Lay and Mountain Dew retro style cans and bags (not pictured) caught me off guard at the grocery store. It was eye catching, a little fun and I went so far as to write about for a blog. Kudos Kroger marketing team and whomever was involved in that decision.

     2. Masters of the Universe on Netflix : No spoilers!!! This remake on the 1980’s kid classic is well done. This is the closest attempt to remain true to the original drawing style and presentation of the cartoon. However, Netflix has done a great job modernizing the storyline, feel and overall presentation. It’s an interesting mix of nostalgia and quality story telling that you don’t want to miss! Part 1 is out now!

   3. Reminiscence movie: I saw the trailer for this while seeing Black Widow and it immediately caught me. The opening lines of the trailer ” You’re going on a journey. A journey through memory…” was all I needed to hear. Add in (actor name) and I’m in! This is released on August 18th both in theaters and on HBO MAX. I am committing now to writing a long form piece on this!
Pineapple with care!
